SAMi looks for any motion and alarms when the motion lasts longer than a period you specify. The motion does not need to be convulsive. The camera is sensitive and can pick up subtle motion especially if it is mounted nearby. But the camera does have to see motion, if the motion is hidden by covers for example it won't alarm.
Keep in mind SAMi is not a medical device. SAMi can be useful as a tool to reduce risk but it is not 100% reliable. If you do move away from co-sleeping you might want to consider also using another monitoring device in conjunction with SAMi such as a pulse oximeter. In any case we recommend speaking with a qualified medical professional about your best course of action.
we bring this up because you say she is at high risk for SUDEP and I want you to make a completely informed decision. We do offer a 45 day return policy for a full refund if you want to give SAMi a try.
