There are three extremely important alerting features in the SAMi App that will alert you if the camera disconnects or the app crashes. While these instances are rare, it's important to be alerted when they happen so you can take necessary action to monitor someone if the SAMi Camera loses connection.
These features can be turned on in the Alarms section of the SAMi Settings:
Beep on App Not Active - This ensures you are alerted if the app crashes
When on you will get an alert if the SAMi app stops running. If you touch the alert the SAMi app will restart. Note that if you immediately exit the SAMi app again you will not get another alert; the app must be running for a while for this alert to re-arm.
Beep on Camera Fault
This setting causes a periodic beep alert to sound if SAMi is not sensing motion. The normal setting is ON. This also enables the beep if you get an iOS notification that pauses the SAMi app, for example, a battery low warning. IMPORTANT: the alert will only beep if the alarm is enabled or if the mic is on.
Guided access can be found in your Apple Device's settings:
Guided Access Mode
iOS has a hidden feature called "Guided Access" that can greatly increase the SAMi app's reliability. When Guided Access is enabled for the SAMi app the home and power buttons are disabled, notifications are disabled, other apps cannot run in the background, and if the SAMi app or iOS device stops running for any reason the iOS device restarts SAMi automatically.
We highly recommend you run in Guided Access mode if you can. If you have an iOS device dedicated to SAMi (also recommended) you can leave it in Guided Access mode all the time. Otherwise, it is easy to start and stop Guided Access once you have set it up. This will prevent you from accidentally hitting the home button and stopping the SAMi app in the middle of the night. It will also prevent notifications (such as the arguably too-frequent iOS update messages) from interrupting the SAMi app.
To set up Guided Access, please follow these instructions:
- Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access. (On an iPad you may need to tap Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access)
- Turn on the switch to enable Guided Access.
- Then set Display Auto-Lock to “Never”.
- Tap "Passcode Settings" and enter a passcode. I use "000000" but you can make it more secure if you like. If your device supports Touch ID you can turn that on as well.
- Now launch the SAMi app. To start Guided Access, triple-click the home button.
To exit Guided Access, triple-click the home button again (or press the Home button and use Touch ID).
If you forget the passcode (you should have used "000000"!) press and hold the home and power buttons. After a few seconds, your device will power off. You can then turn it back on and Guided Access will be off.
You can customize Guided Access, for example by default the volume buttons are disabled but these can be enabled. Here are Apple's complete instructions on Guided Access.
